Bill Syringe Feeds Ben
After Ben's
surgery to remove a golf-ball sized tumor from her pancreas in
February 1997 up until her death 6 months later Ben had to be hand fed. The
syringe was one used to give medicine to babies and appears out of focus at the
lower left.
We fed her a variant of a recipe first concocted by Fran Wiles -- consisting of
Sustecal, turkey baby food, banana yogurt, Nutrical, and a bit of Taurine.
Sometimes during good periods she would eat solid food on her own out of one
of the communal bowls.
This picture was taken about a month before Ben's death.
Ben's sister Jerry
also required hand feeding during her illness.
In contrast Jerry never ate on her own and even usually had
to be given water by hand.
